KNOW THY SELF. KNOW THY FRIEND

In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of relationships and interactions. We all have a natural desire to connect with others and to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. However, as we navigate through life, we also encounter individuals who may not have our best interests at heart. These individuals may seem friendly and supportive, but their true intentions are to exploit our resources and abilities for their own benefit. It's essential to be aware of these individuals and to know how to protect ourselves from being used.

One of the first signs of someone who may be trying to use you is their lack of genuine interest in your well-being. They may make promises or offer help, but when it comes down to it, their actions don't align with their words. They may also make it seem like they are doing you a favour, when in reality, they are only helping themselves. For example, a colleague may offer to help you with a project, but their true intention is to take credit for your work and advance their own career. Or, a friend may offer to lend you money, but their true intention is to control your actions and decisions until you pay them back.

Another red flag is when someone expects you to always be available for them, but is not willing to reciprocate the same level of availability or support. They may also only reach out to you when they need something and disappear when they don't. For example, a family member may expect you to drop everything and come to their aid, but they never return the favour. Or, a romantic partner may only contact you when they want something and ignore you the rest of the time.

It's important to remember that your time, energy, and resources are valuable, and you should not let others take advantage of them. A healthy relationship is built on mutual respect, trust, and give-and-take. It's essential to set boundaries and communicate them clearly to others. Be assertive and express your needs, wants, and limits. When you do this, you create a foundation of mutual respect and understanding, which is vital for any relationship.

It can be difficult to recognise when someone is using you, and even harder to distance yourself from them. Often, we are so caught up in the relationship that we don't see the warning signs. We may also feel guilty or ashamed for setting boundaries and standing up for ourselves. However, it's essential to remember that you deserve to be treated with respect and kindness, and you should not settle for anything less.

One way to protect yourself from being used is to be mindful of the people around you. Pay attention to your gut instincts and listen to your inner voice. If something feels off, it probably is. Trust your intuition and take the time to reflect on your relationships. Ask yourself, "Does this person make me feel good about myself? Do they respect my boundaries and values? Do they support my goals and aspirations?" If the answer is no, then it's time to re-evaluate the relationship and make a decision about whether to continue it or not.

Another way to protect yourself from being used is to surround yourself with people who genuinely care about you and your well-being. These are the ones who will be there to support you through the good times and the bad. They will celebrate your successes and comfort you during your struggles. They will respect your boundaries and encourage you to be true to yourself. These are the people who will lift you up and make you a better person.

In the end, it's important to remember that you are in control of your life and your relationships. You have the power to choose whom you surround yourself with and how you interact with others. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourself and set boundaries to protect yourself from those who just want to use you for their own gain.
